A fine late 19th century Yoruba Gelede mask .

A good example of a male Gelede mask used in the Yoruba Gelede masquerades.

The Gelede masquerade is associated with the recognition of the power of woman and moreover the appeasement of potential witches,

the masquerade incorporates a large corpus of mask styles which are kept in a special house and only brought out and used during the Gelede celebrations.
